Development in Charleston County has far outpaced transportation infrastructure. To improve the quality of life for all Charlestonians, we desperately need to improve our roads and public transit infrastructure, as well as to conserve more Greenspace.
The County has an opportunity to do this with a proposed $5.4 billion, half-percent transportation sales tax. If approved by County residents in a 2024 referendum, this tax would take effect once the current 2004 sales tax expires in 2027 or 2028. This is the soonest that any of these funds could be spent.
Unfortunately, this proposed tax does not actually address the transportation infrastructure needs of the County. Only 15% of the total would be allocated to new projects other than the Mark Clark Extension (526). And both mass transit and the Greenbelt Program are woefully underfunded.
THERE IS A BETTER WAY!
